Though it seems like much of New York is away on summer vacation, August is by no means a dead time for live music in New York. The Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center is in full swing, and the festival's namesake orchestra offers up a number of different programs featuring works by Haydn, Beethoven, Bach, and - of course - Mozart. The late night chamber recitals at the Kaplan Penthouse are an intimate experience and a hot ticket. I'm especially eager to see the Danish String Quartet on August 9 and pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard on August 17. The festival runs through August 22; tickets at the Lincoln Center box office.
The venerable Orchestra of St. Luke's wraps up its season at Caramoor on August 2 with featured soloist piano-superstar Helene Grimaud. Caramoor isn't in the city, but it's worth the trip to Westchester to experience this renowned venue in its cool green garden setting. Tickets via Caramoor.org.
Joe's Pub hosts classical performances from time to time, and on August 7, the flute-piano duo RighteousGIRLS gives a performance in celebration of its new CD, gathering blue. The recording - and this concert - features works by a double fistful of contemporary classical and jazz artists, including Vijay Iyer, Randy Woolf and Christian Carey. Tickets at publictheater.org or at the door.
I have to say, I am completely thrilled to discover there's a terrific - and free - summer concert series in Inwood, presented by the chamber music initiative, Listen Closely. Works for violin and viola will be performed at Dichter Pharmacy Soda Shop (Aug. 14), Inwood Greenmarket and Fort Tryon Park (Aug. 15) and Bruce's Garden (Aug. 16). The group also has a free program of music for string quartet at the same venues on September 18, 19 and 20.
One more bit to carry you through the end of summer: Usually Labor Day weekend and the week leading up to it are dead dead dead as far as classical music offerings. Metropolitan Opera has the cure for the what-do-we-do-tonight dilemma - screenings of HD performances from past seasons every evening, August 28 through September 7. It's completely free, chairs are set up on the plaza and (my favorite aspect) you can come and go as you please.
Stay cool and enjoy the lazy days of summer.
